Well, the decorations throughout the park are phenomenal! There are huge multicolored balloon archways.... and large balloon sculptures... And there is special music being piped throughout the park. It's just a very festive atmosphere....

Hi Sarabi.... The Skyway is so OVBIOUSLY gone... I understand that the law required some kind of update in it's design to accommodate handicapped guests, and it would have been too extensive of an undertaking, so they decided not to update it.... Bing may know more about that.

"The Spirit of Pocahontas," a dazzling, dramatic musical stage show is Disneyland's newest LIVE entertainment attraction presented at the Fantasyland Theater (formally Videopolis amphitheater) in Fantasyland. The show features songs from the motion picture score by Alan Mencken and Stephen Schwartz, and tells the story of Pocahontas and John Smith in its own distinctive theatrical style.

No, Mowgli, they don't seem to be doing it that way. In 1995 things are more "streamlined"..... according to the original castmembers present today, the celebration today is much different... and more "controlled"!

WESTcot has been put on hold unfortunately. Plans were set on the back burner until Disneyland's more immediate needs could be met. (i.e. Indy Jones, new Tomorrowland). When the time is right, Disney is looking into Long Beach as a possible site for the once-proposed Port Disney.

Special events and celebrations will continue all day and into the night... including the unveiling of a 40th Anniversary time capsule containing 40 select pieces of 1995 Disneyland memorabilia. The capsule is sealed in a place of honor at Disneyland, to be opened 40 years hence in the year 2035.

The crowd recorded an "Oh What a Beautiful Morning" Greeting for "CBS This Morning." With yesterday's rain here, we were concerned for conditions... but it is TRULY a BEAUTIFUL Day in the park!

Hi Mowg! Indeed, many of them have....for instance, the old Tobacco Shop is now a Sports Store! But for the most part, the buildings have remained true to the opening day look!

Fess Parker, who played Davey Crockett in 1954, would like to share some thoughts with you during the session! He says, "40 years ago, all I could tell you was that there were more people than I had ever seen! Anyone who I had ever seen before on stage- They were THERE!"

Fess Parker continues... "Buddy Ebsen and I were in our costumes, which were made of LEATHER! It was a very hot day! (laughs) And the mental strain was amazing because I am not a dancer, but they had integrated and Buddy was (and still is). They had integrated us into a routine with dancing and singing, which we did under the bright sun and we had to avoid open ditches!"

"I really enjoyed riding with Walt Disney at the head of the first parade with a couple of his polo ponies." Gayle LeBeau- "So you were in costume all day long?" Fess Parker: Well... until we did the show and when that was over, I made my escape! <laugh> The parade was wonderful and WALT DISNEY was so happy! He was just exuberant with the fact that we pulled it off!"

According to Roy Disney, his nephew, in his speech today, Walt would have been especially please that things have continued on in the tradition he had established from the beginning. Same quality and attention to detail that made Disneyland what it is today......and I believe that is true.

by the way -- they played a taped recording of Walt delivering his opening day speech, and it was a real emotional moment. There was much sniffing throughout the crowd, and Roy even seemed to tear up a bit....... it was a nice touch!

Plans have begun for the complete reshaping of Tomorrowland. Along with Alien Encounter, the area will also receive The Timekeeper and a possible re-appearance of the famous Flying Saucers! Can you imagine that? I've always wanted to try those.....<G>

Dick Nunis says that "thinking about 40 years ago, we've come a LONG way! Gayle: What was your official job title?" Dick: I was getting my master's degree at the University of Southern California, and my plan for my life was to be a football coach. I had played football with USC when we used to graduate athletes as well as win games."

Dick continues, " I needed a summer job, so I took a temporary job for the summer in orientation training. A guy by the name of Van France hired me and we had responsibility of training all of the new cast members and that was my job!"

"On opening day, I was then loaned to the operation department and was in charge of all the catering to all the celebrities. We had to set up tents backstage to feed all the celebs."

Dick says that then "I got a promotion into general services. Actually, I'll never forget the first salary check I got. They said, "don't cash it.... and I said, "What do you mean, 'don't cash it?' and they said 'We have to make sure the hourly checks clear first." So I told them "please transfer me back to hourly!"

Gayle:"Why were you nicknamed, The White Tornado?"

Dick: "Back in 1957, we had the Indian war canoes for the first time. I put in a requisition for 17 indians with canoe experience. I ended up with 17 indians that never saw a canoe!"

"So fortunately, being a physical education major, I knew how to paddle a canoe. So I taught 17 indians how to paddle a canoe! and I had been known to walk fast so the indians nicknamed me "The White Tornado"

We literally paved Main Street down to the main gate and then opened it! We made one basic mistake: The tickets we gave out to all the VIP's said: "and party." And I can remember people getting off busses with THEIR PARTY!!!! <laugh> So that day we had a LOT of guests and too many guests and it was very difficult."

Russell Means, the voice of Powhatan in Pocahontas, has stopped by as well! He is a major figure in contemporary Native American affairs. The Los Angeles Times has dubbed him "the most famous American Indian since Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse." In 1971, he captured international attention when he led the '71 siege at Wounded Knee."

Russell Means has devoted his life to eliminating racism of any kind. Means refuses to play any BUT Native American roles, and then only if the treatment is authentic. His films include "The Last of The Mohicans," "Natural Born Killers," "Windrunner," and "Wagons East." He recently played the part of Sitting Bull in the CBS mini series "Buffalo Girls."

Gayle asked Dick Nunis about a drinking fountain shortage... and Dick says: "Prior to the opening, there was a plumbing strike... but it was settled. It was an Orange County plumbing strike and not aimed against Disneyland. But there were no plumbers available. There was a big meeting because we didn't physically have the time to finish the drinking fountains and the restrooms. And Walt Disney, God Bless Him, said, "You know, they can drink Coke and Pepsi but they can't pee in the street! >

Yes, and it was in a city close to my home town recently. We got to see it, and it was wonderful. There were animators giving talks, and music and props and displays. Disney's Wild Kingdom breaks ground this coming September and will have a three-year construction schedule. That makes Central Florida's newest and Disney's fourth gated attraction will come to life in the summer of 1998!

John Hench: At that time I was working on the Moon Ride (40 years ago, in preparation for the opening of the park) and it was my baby. I was here all night, and the devotion to the park hasn't changed... its been like that ever since. When you go home at night, you are still working.

Gayle: "Did you know Mark Davis and Dick Irvine?" John Hench: "We were very close, especially with Dick. We were kind of a pair. Dick was all over the place... He was director of W.E.D., which was Walt's initials."

John Hench: "When We worked on motion pictures, we all worked as a team. It is too big for one guy. We each worked on several different projects."

Gayle LeBeau: "John, can you give us some recollections of opening day?" John Hench: "I was in the moon ride all night, I was finishing and fixing things that the electricians left and walked off. Walt came in once to walk around to see what was going on. I watched the opening from what is now the administration building. Walt was really exhausted but very optimistic and excited about everything!"

Some trivia about the big Birthday Cake! Disneyland guests are expected to consume a record number of pieces of birthday cake during the Park operating hours today. Enough cake was baked to distribute more than 300,000 pieces. 15,000 pounds of flour were used in the baking, along with: 2,850 pounds of eggs and 2,850 pounds of shortening.

The icing on the birthday cake was prepared using: 3,200 pounds of powdered sugar, 1,240 pounds of shortening, 8 gallons of vanilla, 380 pounds of margerine, and 1,500 pounds of colored sprinkle topping. The cake was baked by Martino's Bakery in Burbank, California.

LOL! No, no....the Flying Saucers were an attraction that graced Tomorrowland back in August of 1961. These were little discs with seats, and they floated, like hovercrafts, on a powerful cushion of air created by giant fans underneath the grid. You moved forward, backwards and from side to side by shifting your body wieght! Unfortunately, the ride had sufficient downtime to warrant its eventual removal. Bummer! Supposedly, they're bringing them back!

The set-up for "Honey, I Shrunk The Audience" is more complex than "Captain EO", so it'll require some intensive figuring. The theatre seats are situated on a gimble, which allows the "moving" effect. A lot of re-tooling is going to have to happen in the Magic Eye Theatre before this show debuts!

The Disneyland monorail travels from Tomorrowland to the Disneyland Hotel and back again. A trip of about 2.5 miles. But up until June of 1961, the monorail didn't even go NEAR the hotel! The link was added to make life easier on the resort guests, and it was also cleverly transformed into a second gate for the park!

Disney still owns that property, and they're sitting on it wisely. Walt was always regretful that he didn't purchase more land to expand into. Once the park had opened, a berm of businesses cropped up around the periphery of Disneyland.....practically hedging it in. Disney has been able to acquire land surely, but slowly...which they'll keep until just the right moment.

The first thing you need to do is head down to Casting and pick up an application! Disney usually hires year-round for Casual and Seasonal employment! I prefer to think of it as "antiquated"<G> Yes, plans have been on the boards to revitalize the Submarine Voyage AND 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Not only are the rides notoriously slow loaders....but they also are expensive to maintain, with all the water treatment. Do you know how hard it is to keep that water sparkling so that guests can see mermaids through it?
